Chapter

Sixteen

The next couple of days were more of the same.

Jareth knew that he had to make preparations to travel with Corvus, but he wasn’t sure what to prepare for, nor did he know what he could offer the mage. Still, having a mage who wanted to work with him should be to his benefit. It was just that he didn’t know how he felt about it—and whether he would get much out of it.

He’d not seen Reva since the attack on the boundary. He hadn’t gone looking for her but had thought that he would come across her again, especially as there had been some chatter about what had gone on along the boundary. He didn’t know which command group she was a part of, though he could ask to find out, but he didn’t know if he wanted to, anyway.

Jareth wasn’t sure how he felt about the events at the border.

They’d been attacked. He’d made glyphs. And then Corvus had saved them.

Corvus hadn’t said anything about Jareth needing to learn more, not as the other mage had, though he suspected it was all part of the same test, which meant that he would need to tread carefully, as he didn’t want to anger any mage and end up on the wrong side of them, especially if he did have some potential to learn to be a mage.

That seemed impossible, but that was what they had claimed. And if he did …

Why should it be impossible?

He had made glyphs. That was something that mages did. That meant that he did have some potential.

Jareth walked along the perimeter of the barracks at the edge of the city of Valtorin. As he passed by, he noticed several soldiers gathering to train. The barracks were well constructed, made of sturdy stone and equipped with large, thick wooden doors. The roof was made of stout red tiles, and the windows were small and narrow, designed to let in a minimal amount of light while keeping out the cold winter air.

The soldiers were dressed in leather armor and carrying wooden swords, practicing their swings and thrusts. Jareth noticed how they moved as one, their movements smooth and precise. Some of the soldiers were laughing and chatting, while others were focused solely on their training.

“Keir?” Jareth said, noticing him resting near the wall.

Keir had his head down, his brow drenched in sweat. His sword rested on the ground next to him. When he looked up at Jareth, his eyes looked tired.

“What’s going on with the training?” Jareth asked.

“Movement at the border. More than before.”

Jareth hadn’t heard that, though since the attack of the horde, he hadn’t been back. “Close?”

“Mostly north. Sounds like there’s been activity near the Isa district.”

That was quite a bit farther to the north, and far enough away that Jareth wouldn’t have expected the Valtorin barracks to be involved. Isa had its own barracks. “Why are we getting dragged in?”

“Don’t know,” Keir said with a shrug. He glanced over at the others as they continued training.
